Our time in Peru surprised us. The place is quite developed compared to areas we had visited, has its own cuisine that is different to anything else in the world and the landscape is varied and expansive.
Attractions like the Inca Trail bring travellers from all over the world and they have made sure that the rest of the country is just as appealing. Peru felt like it was catered to the tourist market. It had a bit more infrastructure compared to what we were used from the countries we had already visited. It also appeared that although a lot of locals worked in tourism operations, the novelty of having tourists demanding to be catered to had worn off in this country.
We started our time in the beach towns of Mancora and Huanchaco before venturing into Lima, the captial. Our next stop was the desert in the Nazca before heading to the Colca Canyon via Arequipa. Our main reason for heading to Peru was the same as most peoples were were off to hike the Inca Trail and visit the ruins of Machu Picchu, The destination itself was a little underwhelming due to the tourist circus that was there while we were. The last stop was Lake Titicaca, an area that is famous for the historic floating islands but also relies on the tourist dollar as it's main source of income.
